Executive Assistant Job Position With Visa Sponsorship Available At Olymel
Big Sky Farms Inc., established in 1995 by Florian and Betty Possberg in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, rapidly became a significant player in Canada’s pork industry. Under the Possbergs’ leadership, the company expanded its operations to become the largest pork producer in the province, employing over 400 individuals and managing a herd of approximately 42,000 sows, with an annual production nearing one million hogs.
In 2012, facing financial challenges due to rising feed costs and declining hog prices, Big Sky Farms entered receivership. Subsequently, in January 2013, Olymel L.P., a leading Canadian agri-food company, acquired Big Sky Farms’ Canadian assets through its subsidiary, OlySky.
This strategic acquisition aimed to secure a stable hog supply for Olymel’s processing facilities, particularly its Red Deer, Alberta plant. Post-acquisition, the operations continued under the Big Sky Farms name, maintaining their presence in Saskatchewan’s pork production landscape.
Despite ownership changes, Big Sky Farms has remained integral to Saskatchewan’s agricultural sector.
The company has been recognized for its contributions to the local economy and the broader pork industry. Notably, in 2024, Florian and Betty Possberg were honored with the Award of Distinction: Lifetime Achievement during the Saskatchewan Pork Industry Symposium, acknowledging their enduring impact on the province’s pork production and their commitment to agricultural excellence.
